Spring 2009 Concerts: The Renaissance

Historically Informed Performances February 28, March 14, and April 18, 2009

The Las Positas College Early Music Concert Series opens its fourth season, The Renaissance, in February 2009. The Series is committed to excellent performance and to encouraging a climate of creativity, imagination, and integrity for audience and performers alike through live performances of medieval, renaissance, baroque and classical music. These historically informed performances bring brilliant music to life in an intimate environment. Each concert begins with a pre-concert talk, providing an historical setting for the music and concludes with a post concert reception with the performers. All concerts will be held in the college Library, building 2000.

Ciaramella ~ February 26, 2009

Discover the 15th-century renaissance through the sounds of the internationally renowned 15th-century wind band, Ciaramella. Their commanding performances of the intricate rhythms and unusual harmonies of the early renaissance, explored through events and manuscripts feature shawms, sackbuts, recorders and bagpipe. We will focus on features of renaissance music and some of the unusual instruments of the period.

Sex Chordae ~ March 14, 2009

Discover the music of Sex Chordae, a consort of viols. We will explore the rich body of music for viol consort of the 16th and 17th centuries, contrast instruments of the renaissance, the baroque, and the modern periods, explore the musical texture of consorts and ensembles, and listen to the variety of musical styles from late-renaissance England.

Mosaico ~ Thursday, April 16, 2009

We will explore the renaissance music of Italy, Southern France, and Spain in a Mosaico of Florentine Carnival, garden, birds, and love songs in the music of Diego Ortiz, Marco Cara, and Pierluigi di Palestrina among others. We will listen to recordings of Shira Kammen with various artists, learn about some of the common instruments of the period, and explore the music practice of the period.

The Concert Series is also sponsoring a series of Music Appreciation classes on the Thursday night before the concert to enhance the concert experience. For additional information about these classes see the Community Education Brochure.
